Nyandarua Senator John Methu escapes assassination attempt

Nyandarua Senator John Methu narrowly escaped what supporters claim was an assassination attempt during a chaotic Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) rally in Kakamega on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

On social media, videos allege that police fired live bullets aimed at Methu, with one bullet reportedly missing his head by millimetres, though these claims remain unverified by official sources.

The incident occurred during a DCP rally led by deputy party leader Cleophas Malala and Methu, which descended into chaos as police clashed with supporters.

According to reports, trouble began around 11 a.m. at Amalemba Estate when police barricaded roads, fired teargas into Methu’s vehicle, and allegedly used live bullets to disperse the crowd.

Methu sought cover during the melee, temporarily disappearing amid the violence.

Methu later accused President William Ruto’s administration of using state agencies to target critics, claiming the police actions were an attempt to silence opposition voices.

“They fired teargas into my car and used live bullets, but I want to tell Ruto that as long as we are alive, we will make him a one-term president,” Methu declared.

Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mohammud denied allegations of an assassination attempt, stating that the police response was aimed at restoring order after an unauthorised gathering caused public disorder.

No arrests have been reported in connection with the alleged attempt on Methu’s life.

The incident has heightened tensions in Kakamega, with local residents and DCP supporters condemning the police actions.

The unrest disrupted businesses, forcing shops to close and leaving traders counting losses. Investigations into the events are ongoing, with calls for accountability growing louder.
