Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and bodily harm following a months-long investigation involving a “double-digit” number of alleged victims, Oslo police announced.
Høiby, stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, has faced intense scrutiny since his repeated arrests in 2024 for allegations of rape, assault, and criminal damage, marking a significant scandal for Norway’s royal family.
The charges, detailed by Police Attorney Andreas Kruszewski, include one count of rape involving intercourse, two counts of rape without intercourse, four counts of sexual assault, and two counts of bodily harm, based on evidence from text messages, witness testimonies, and police searches.
Høiby’s legal troubles began in August 2024, when he was arrested for assault and property damage at a woman’s apartment in Oslo’s Frogner neighbourhood, where police found a knife embedded in a bedroom wall.
He admitted to the incident, citing intoxication from alcohol and cocaine, and issued an apology via NRK, pledging to seek treatment for substance abuse.
Subsequent arrests in September and November 2024 followed additional rape allegations, including a case involving a woman unable to resist due to unconsciousness.
Høiby’s defence attorney, Petar Sekulic, stated that his client takes the accusations seriously but denies most charges, particularly those related to sexual abuse and violence.
The case, involving over 10 alleged victims, has dominated Norwegian headlines, with the royal family’s popularity taking a hit.
Høiby, who holds no royal title or duties, was once affectionately called “Little Marius” but now faces public backlash.
Netizens noted the severity of the 23-count charge sheet, including three rapes. The royal palace has remained silent, stating the case will follow “normal procedures”.
Høiby remains free pending a possible trial, with prosecutors to decide on indictment in the coming months.
Amid global unrest, including Kenya’s Gen Z protests against police brutality, Høiby’s case underscores broader issues of accountability.
His history of drug use and association with controversial figures has further fuelled criticism, with media questioning whether his proximity to the royal family has afforded him preferential treatment.
