Nyandarua OCS fired after woman lost pregnancy in police custody citing being beaten

A woman has suffered a miscarriage while in custody at the Rwanyambo Police Post in Nyandarua County, prompting swift action from the National Police Service (NPS). The incident, which has sparked public concern, has led to the interdiction of the officer in charge of the station, with investigations underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In a statement issued to newsrooms on Thursday evening, NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed the interdiction of the station’s commanding officer, effective immediately.

Nyaga emphasised that the NPS is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, and a thorough probe has been launched to establish the facts.

“The Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), in collaboration with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), has taken over the investigation to ensure transparency and accountability,” Nyaga stated. He added that the NPS is committed to upholding the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms and will provide updates as the investigation progresses.

Preliminary reports indicate that the woman was detained at the Rwanyambo Police Post, though details regarding the reasons for her arrest remain unclear.

The circumstances leading to her miscarriage are under scrutiny, with questions raised about the conditions of her detention and the quality of care provided.

The incident has drawn attention to the treatment of vulnerable individuals, particularly pregnant women, in police custody.

The collaboration between the IAU and IPOA is expected to examine whether there was any negligence or misconduct on the part of the officers involved.

IPOA, an independent body tasked with overseeing police conduct, is likely to focus on whether the woman’s rights were violated during her detention.

The NPS has called for calm as the investigation proceeds, assuring the public that any officers found culpable will face the full force of the law. This incident adds to growing concerns about police conduct and the need for reforms to ensure the safety and dignity of all individuals in custody.

As the community awaits further details, advocacy groups have called for justice and improved protocols to protect detainees, particularly women, in police facilities across the country.
