The football world is reeling from the tragic passing of Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a devastating car crash in Zamora, Spain, on July 3, 2025, as confirmed by Spanish authorities.
The Premier League issued a heartfelt statement, saying, “Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion.”
The incident, occurring just two weeks after Jota’s wedding to Rute Cardoso, has sent shockwaves through the global football community, with tributes pouring in on social media.
Jota, 28, and Andre, 26, a professional footballer for FC Penafiel, were travelling in a Lamborghini on the A-52 motorway when a tyre blowout caused the vehicle to veer off the road and catch fire at 12:30 a.m. local time, according to the Guardia Civil.
Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene, with no other vehicles involved.
Jota, a Portugal international with 49 caps and a key figure in Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League title win, leaves behind his wife and three children.
His brother Andre, an attacking midfielder, had made 59 appearances for Penafiel, contributing to their 11th-place finish in Portugal’s LigaPro.
Liverpool FC expressed their devastation, stating, “The club is devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. We request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff be respected as they come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”
Tributes have flooded in from clubs like Manchester United, Everton, and FC Porto, where both brothers played, as well as from figures like Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, who called the news “heartbreaking”.
The Portuguese Football Federation requested a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain.
The tragedy portrays Jota’s legacy as a beloved figure known for his infectious joy and 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool.
As fans gather at Anfield’s Bill Shankly gates to leave tributes, the football community mourns the loss of two champions whose impact will endure.
