Former Kenyan media personality Charlie Karumi has made a remarkable leap onto the global stage with a role in Season 3 of Apple TV+’s sci-fi drama Invasion. The Nairobi-born actor, known for his vibrant career in Kenyan television, film, and radio, plays Sergeant Amoako in five episodes of the acclaimed series, which is an important turning point in his journey since relocating to Canada in 2022.
Karumi’s path to Invasion began in Nairobi, where he first discovered his passion for acting in the drama club at Alliance High School. He honed his craft at the Phoenix Players Theatre and landed early roles in Kenyan productions like Lies That Bind and Nairobi Half Life.
His breakout came in 2014 as Tony in Jane and Abel, followed by a 2015 Kalasha Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Fundi-Mentals. Karumi also built a strong media presence, hosting shows on K24, Kiss TV, and radio stations like NRG and Homeboyz.
In 2022, driven by ambition and a desire to join his wife in Canada, Karumi moved to Vancouver, a hub for film and TV production. “I want to be a movie star,” he said, eyeing Hollywood opportunities.
His role in Invasion, a series about a global alien incursion, places him alongside actors like Nhi Do and Curtis Lum, with his character appearing in key episodes, including 3.7 and 3.9, directed by Brad Anderson.
The Kenyan diaspora has celebrated Karumi’s achievement, with fans on X praising his transition from local to international screens. Posts showcase his dynamic performance, with one user expressing, “Charlie is excelling in Invasion!” Kenya’s proud!” His YouTube channel, ChromeyEnt, also buzzes with updates, including behind-the-scenes glimpses of his Invasion experience.
Karumi’s success underscores Vancouver’s growing reputation as a filming destination, often dubbed “Hollywood’s well-mannered cousin.”
However, his journey hasn’t been without challenges. Leaving a thriving Kenyan media career for an uncertain path abroad required courage. “I’m speaking it into existence,” he said, reflecting on his dreams of global stardom.
As Invasion Season 3 gains traction, Karumi’s role is a testament to his talent and determination. For a Kenyan actor once known for local dramas, this international breakthrough signals a bright future, with fans eagerly awaiting his next move in the global entertainment industry.
