How forces pushed for promotion without my knowledge

In Kenya, people often view government jobs as the key to a stable and prosperous career. Everyone dreams of that steady pay cheque and cushy benefits. But let me let you in on a little secret: in some county offices, climbing the career ladder has little to do with your dedication, skills, or years of service. It’s all about who’s in your circle and what you’re willing to trade for a step up. I dedicated nearly 12 years to my county government job. I showed up on time, tackled piles of paperwork, typed up reports, and sat through countless meetings with a smile.

Every year, my evaluations glowed with praise; words like “dependable”, “hard-working”, and “consistent” were thrown my way. But that’s where the good vibes stopped. No promotions. No pay bumps. Just the same old desk and title. Meanwhile, I watched newer, often younger colleagues breeze in, stick around for a couple of years, and then—poof!—they’d snag big titles and bigger salaries.
