Obtaining a job in Kenya can be a challenging endeavour. Mass recruitments for teachers, civil servants, or the military draw crowds of hopeful youth, all eager to prove their worth. But let’s be real, without the right “connections” or cash for bribes, those from humble backgrounds often leave empty-handed. I know this struggle firsthand. Raised by my grandmother after losing my parents, I grew up hearing that education and grit were my ticket out of poverty.

The military, with its stability and respect, became my dream, a chance to change my life and hers. When recruitment rolled around, I’d show up at dawn, standing in endless lines under the blazing sun, only to watch others get picked while my name stayed silent.
