We’ve been hitched for a solid fifteen years now, and oh boy, those early days? Pure magic. My hubby and I were like two peas in a pod, chatting nonstop, dreaming up plans side by side, and cracking jokes that left us in stitches. But life has a funny way of sneaking in changes, doesn’t it? Lately, though, he’d drag in after dark and plop down without a peep. “Are you okay?” I’d nudge, only to hear, “Just beat from the day.”

Our mechanic’s life keeps him elbow-deep in engines till all hours, sure, but even lazy Sundays stayed hushed. We were like roommates sharing a house, not hearts. I racked my brain: whipped up his go-to spaghetti, snagged that flannel shirt he eyed, and even softened my tone. Zilch. One sleepless night, tears soaking my pillow, I ached for his goofy grin and those late-night whispers.

Was it me? Had the spark fizzled for good? Then, out of the blue one twilight, he beat the clock home. There I was on the porch, shucking corn in the fading light.
