Madagascar’s New President Colonel Michaël Randrianirina Calls for a “Complete Break with France”. In his first interview since taking office, Madagascar’s new leader, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, has declared his intention to pursue a full political and economic break from France, signalling a major shift in the country’s foreign policy.
Speaking to Sputnik Africa, President Randrianirina emphasised the need for new, mutually beneficial partnerships, stating, “We will find partners who will work with us in a win-win way.”
He added that the Malagasy people are pleased with the recent political changes, describing his leadership as “the beginning of change and hope.”
The newly sworn-in President of the Refoundation, who officially assumed office on October 17, outlined his government’s top priorities: addressing severe electricity and water shortages that had fuelled mass protests across the country in late September.
These demonstrations ultimately led to the downfall of former President Andry Rajoelina. Randrianirina was appointed President of the Refoundation by the High Constitutional Court following the political upheaval.
He has pledged to seek international partners capable of delivering urgent solutions to Madagascar’s infrastructure and energy challenges.
