Trump imposes a 100% tariff on China and hints at cancelling the Xi summit as the trade war heats up. U.S. President Donald Trump has dropped the news about a 100% tariff on all Chinese imports, which has stirred up tensions with Beijing again and could put his upcoming summit with President Xi Jinping in jeopardy.
So, this big shift comes after China decided to impose new export restrictions on rare earth minerals and technologies. These materials are extremely important for things like semiconductors, defence systems, and the green energy sector.
Beijing has set up rules that make it necessary for foreign companies to get approval before they can export goods that have rare earth components. Washington argues that this gives China an unfair advantage in global supply chains.
Trump described the restrictions as “shockingly hostile” and claimed that Beijing is “weaponising minerals to strangle free markets.” He mentioned that the tariffs might kick in as soon as November 1 if China doesn’t change its approach.
It looks like the announcement is throwing a bit of uncertainty into the long-planned meeting between the two leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit coming up later this month. “If China keeps acting in bad faith, there’s really no point in meeting,” Trump said to reporters.
It looks like the White House is suggesting some extra steps, like putting U.S. export controls on important software and tech components, as part of a bigger strategy to counteract certain issues.
Beijing hasn’t officially responded yet, but people are worried that this clash might undo all the careful diplomacy that’s been happening and could throw the U.S. and China back into a serious trade war.
