Beryl Achieng Odinga, the younger sister of the late Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has died. Ruth Odinga, Raila’s other sister, made the news. She said that Beryl died on Tuesday, November 25. But she didn’t say what caused her death.
Ruth confirmed Beryl’s death and said that Achieng was the daughter of Jaramogi’s first wife, Mary Auma, and the biological sister of Raila Odinga and Oburu Oginga.
The Kisumu County Woman Representative sent an emotional sympathy message in which she remembered the times they spent together and how much Beryl changed her life.
“It is with a sorrowful heart that we tell you that Beryl Achieng Odinga has died suddenly. The late Jaramogi Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga have a daughter. Ruth said, “Mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurus.”
“While we are sorrowful about her death and the giant hole it has left in our lives, we find comfort in knowing that she is safe in the Lord’s arms and are grateful for the priceless time we had together,” she said.
Reports that could not be independently confirmed at the time this story was published say that the dead died in a Nairobi hospital after a protracted fight with sickness.
Sources close to the situation also said that Beryl had been in and out of the hospital and died on Tuesday.
The sister of the previous prime minister, who was not well known, had mostly stayed out of the public eye even though she grew up in a politically active household.
Beryl was an educator, even though she kept a low profile. She was a professional teacher and a lawyer at the same time. She is the only person in the larger Odinga family that went to school in Kenya.
In addition to being a great teacher, she also held high-level jobs, such as Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewage Company (NWSCO).
Beryl married Otieno Abala, a real estate mogul, in 1974, but they subsequently broke up because of rumours of a misunderstanding.
Her death, which happened barely six weeks after Raila’s death on October 15, 2025, when he had a heart attack in India, is also very sad.
