Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Game Awards wins hit nine last night, shattering the previous record set by The Last of Us Part II with seven trophies in 2020, as the breakout turn-based RPG from French debut studio Sandfall Interactive dominated The Game Awards ceremony at the Peacock Theatre.
The stunning sweep included Game of the Year, Best RPG, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Game Direction, Best Debut Indie Game, Best Independent Game, and Best Performance for Jennifer English’s portrayal of Maelle, capping a night where the title snagged prizes in nearly every category it contested after earning a record-tying 12 or 13 nominations.
Developed by a tight-knit team of around 30 at Montpellier-based Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched earlier this year to critical acclaim for its Belle Époque-inspired visuals evoking early 20th-century Paris fantasy, intricate storytelling, and innovative combat blending classic JRPG turn-based mechanics with real-time dodging, parrying, and combo-building.
Players follow Expedition 33 on a desperate quest across a surreal world to defeat the enigmatic Paintress, a godlike figure who annually paints a number on a monolith, dooming everyone who reaches that age to vanish in a puff of smoke. With 33 next on her canvas, the stakes feel personal and urgent.
Sandfall creative director Guillaume Broche called the victories “beyond our wildest dreams” in a post-ceremony interview, noting the game was never meant to explode like this but benefited hugely from Xbox Game Pass exposure that drew in skeptics of the genre. “We made it for lovers of Persona and Final Fantasy, but reaching millions who might skip turn-based titles changed everything,” he said.
In a masterstroke of timing, Sandfall rolled out the free “Thank You” update dubbed Verso’s Drafts just hours after the show wrapped, adding a sprawling new playable dungeon environment packed with fresh enemy encounters, challenging bosses, orchestral tracks, photo mode for screenshot enthusiasts, performance tweaks, and even cosmetic outfits to celebrate fans.
The patch hit PS5, Xbox, PC, and other platforms simultaneously, sparking immediate buzz on social media where players shared early clips of the haunting new area.
Industry analysts say the haul positions Clair Obscur as 2025’s defining indie triumph, outpacing AAA contenders like Hades II and Hollow Knight: Silksong in key creative categories. Sources close to Kepler report sales surging past 5 million units post-launch, with the awards likely to push it toward double digits amid holiday sales.
Voice cast members, including English, used their spotlight to advocate for a dedicated motion capture award at future Game Awards, highlighting the unsung work behind immersive performances. French gaming circles erupted in national pride, with outlets hailing it as a “monumental win for creativity over corporate greed.”
As Expedition 33’s momentum builds, whispers of DLC expansions and potential sequels swirl, cementing Sandfall’s rise from obscurity. For now, the Paintress bows to a new era of RPG mastery.
