Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna has described Rasmus Hojlund’s permanent transfer from Manchester United as a “formality.” The comments came in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport on December 31, 2025.
Hojlund joined Napoli on a season-long loan in the summer of 2025. The deal included an option to buy for around €50 million, or about £43 million. That option turns into an obligation if Napoli qualify for the Champions League. Manna made clear both the club and player see the move as done.
“We did everything we could to sign him,” Manna said. “There were more storied clubs interested, but his will was crucial, and we are proud of it.” He praised Hojlund for fitting well under manager Antonio Conte. The 22-year-old Dane has scored more league goals this season than in his last full year at United.
Manna added, “The player considers himself a Napoli player, and the same goes for us. This is extremely important.” When asked directly if the permanent switch was just a formality, he replied, “As of today, I think so.”
Hojlund moved to Old Trafford from Atalanta in 2023 for a big fee. He showed promise but faced competition after new signings arrived under Ruben Amorim. The loan gave him regular play in Serie A. Reports say he spoke with former teammate Scott McTominay, now at Napoli, before deciding.
At Napoli, Hojlund settled quick. He netted in key games, including recent wins. The team sits third in the table, in the hunt for another title and a Champions League spot. That would trigger the buy clause anyway.
Manchester United get funds if the deal goes through. They could use it for squad changes in January or summer.
Fans of both clubs react. Some United supporters feel mixed about losing a young striker. Napoli fans celebrate keeping him. The player himself said earlier he only wanted Napoli once interest came.
Contracts include details like a possible €85 million release clause later. But for now, focus stays on the field.
The transfer window opens soon. This news suggests one big move already sorted. Hojlund looks set for a long stay in Naples.
Football transfers often drag with talks. Here, it sounds straightforward. Player happy. Club committed. Deal likely sealed.
As the year turns, Hojlund pushes for more goals. Napoli chase silverware. United plan ahead without him. Manna’s words close the chapter on speculation. The Dane’s future points south.
