Betrayed by Trust: My Agribusiness Fall in Eldoret

I’m Joseph Muriuki from Eldoret, and for the longest time, I genuinely thought being a good guy was all the armour I needed. I built a thriving agribusiness supplying cereals all over the Rift Valley. Things were going great—people kept telling me how inspiring my growth was and how refreshingly open and helpful I seemed. Friends and even strangers warned me to watch my back, that not every smile was genuine. I’d just chuckle and brush it off. In my mind, living honestly meant nothing bad could really touch me.

As the business picked up speed, more folks started hanging around. Some said they wanted tips; others acted like they were in my corner cheering me on. I let them in without a second thought—shared my strategies, showed them the books, and even talked openly about upcoming plans. We ate together and travelled for deals, and they’d brag about our tight bond. What I completely missed was how some were quietly sizing me up, spotting where I was vulnerable, all while banking on my blind trust.

It started with my reputation taking hits. Suddenly, wild rumours were flying among traders that I was dodging contracts. Long-time partners ghosted me; others grilled me over stuff I’d never done. Money started vanishing too—deals fell apart out of nowhere, payments went missing, and suppliers got aggressive. I was lost and stressed out of my mind.
