Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has responded to claims about donations made to veteran Bango artist Mzee Ngala during a cultural event last month. Baya said he never promised a specific amount. He gave his contribution in public and hopes the organisers passed it on properly. The statement follows comments from Mzee Ngala about unfulfilled pledges.
The issue started after the first Mijikenda Cultural Gala on December 27, 2025, at Water Grounds in Kilifi Town. Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs organised the event to honour Mzee Ngala, the 90-year-old pioneer of Bango music.
Leaders and guests attended, with performances, dances, and tributes to coastal traditions. Donations were announced to support the elder artist.
Mzee Ngala spoke in an interview on Coco FM. He said pledges totalled more than 5 million shillings that night. But he has received only 170,000 shillings so far. Of that, 100,000 came directly from MP Owen Baya.

The artist expressed disappointment over the rest not arriving. He thanked those who gave but questioned follow-through on promises.
Baya addressed the matter soon after. He said, “I personally did not promise any amount for Elder Ngala’s donation. I gave my donation in front of everyone. I hope those hosts delivered my donation to Mzee Ngala.” The MP stressed his contribution happened openly at the gala. He left it to organisers to handle delivery.
The event drew big crowds. Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho pledged a 2 million shilling donation. Other leaders added pledges too.
The gala celebrated Mijikenda heritage with music, food, and displays. Mzee Ngala performed and received honours as the founder of the Bango genre.
Mzee Ngala has played Bango for decades. The style mixes coastal rhythms and storytelling. Young artists look up to him. The gala aimed to recognise his work and preserve traditions. PS Jacobs called it a success for unity.
Follow-up sometimes lags, leading to questions. In this case, Mzee Ngala’s interview brought attention.
Baya serves as National Assembly Deputy Majority Leader too. He represents Kilifi North and supports coastal development. No further comment from organisers yet on the amounts.
Fans of Mzee Ngala appreciate the spotlight. Social media posts thank donors and share old songs. The artist stays active despite age.
Cultural galas like this build pride in local heritage. The Mijikenda community values music and elders. This one put Bango front and centre.
For now, the donation talk continues quietly. Baya’s clarification aims to set the record straight. Mzee Ngala received some funds and recognition.
