My Reflection Started Smiling Without Me

Most mornings I wake up feeling heavy, eyes barely open, just dragging myself to the bathroom. One day I caught my face in the mirror and stopped cold. I was scowling, still half-asleep and annoyed at the early hour, but the reflection wasn’t. It smiled. Not a big grin – just a small, slow curl at the corners that felt completely wrong.

I rubbed my eyes, splashed water on my face, told myself I was imagining it. But the next morning it happened again. And the morning after that. Every mirror in the house did the same thing. Even the dark screen of my phone when it was off showed that little smile when I leaned close.

It got worse. Sometimes the reflection would lift a hand when I kept mine still. Or it would tilt its head the opposite way I tilted mine. Once, clear as anything, I heard it say my name. A soft whisper, right in my ear, but my lips never moved.

I stopped sleeping properly. I’d lie in bed knowing mirrors were in the house, feeling watched. I started turning them to the wall or covering them with towels.
