Nathan Aké Addresses Lack of Playing Time at Manchester City

Nathan Aké has spoken about pressure from Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman to play more regularly at club level. The Manchester City defender gave comments after a recent Premier League match, saying Koeman told him several times it gets hard to select him without consistent minutes.

“He has said to me a few times actually that he wants me to play more, and sometimes it is difficult to call me up if I don’t play a lot; that’s obvious,” Aké noted. He added that every player wants as much game time as possible. “The only thing I can say is I keep fighting every time.”

Aké, aged 30, has found starts limited this season at City. He often sits behind Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias in central defence. Injuries played a part earlier, but competition stays fierce even when fit. His contract runs until 2027, yet low minutes fuel talk of a possible January move.

Koeman highlighted the issue publicly before. In November 2025, he said Aké feels bothered by the situation himself. The coach values experience but stressed regular play matters, especially with the 2026 World Cup coming up.

The Netherlands qualified strongly for the tournament. Aké remains a key squad member when called. He brings versatility, able to cover centre-back or left-back. Fans see him as reliable in big games.

Man City values Aké too. Pep Guardiola praises his reading of play and professionalism. The team deals with its own challenges this term, sitting lower in the table than usual. Defenders like John Stones faced injuries, opening spots at times.

Still, Aké made just a handful of Premier League starts by early January 2026. Most appearances came in cup games. Reports link him with clubs like Barcelona, who need defensive cover, and some Premier League sides.

Aké stays focused on training and chances. He recovered quickly from knocks and helped in draws against tough opponents. City aim to climb the standings as the season goes on.

For the national team, Koeman watches selections closely. Competition grows in defence with younger players pushing. Aké knows minutes at City could decide his World Cup role.

Talk of transfers will likely continue into the window. City might keep him for depth. Aké has not pushed for a move publicly. He repeats his commitment to fighting for his place.

This situation is common for squad players at big clubs. Balance between club and country adds pressure. Aké handles it calmly so far.

The World Cup expands next summer, hosted across the US, Canada, and Mexico. Places feel more open, but form counts.

Aké joined City in 2020 from Bournemouth. He contributed to titles and a Champions League win. Fans appreciate his steady presence off the bench.

As January approaches, eyes stay on his minutes. A run of games could settle things. For now, he trains and waits for opportunities.
