Pascal Groß, back to Brighton as deal from BVB has been completed today. The German midfielder rejoined his old club on January 2, 2026, signing an 18-month contract until June 2027. Brighton announced it officially after agreeing terms with Borussia Dortmund.
Groß left Brighton in the summer of 2024 to join Dortmund, his boyhood team. He called it a lifelong dream at the time. He wrote a farewell note to fans, saying he left with a heavy heart. Now, less than 18 months later, he heads back to the Amex Stadium.
The fee stays undisclosed, but reports put it around €2 million with possible add-ons up to €1 million more. That’s much less than the roughly £8 million Dortmund paid in 2024.
At 34, Groß wanted more playing time. He made 66 appearances for Dortmund, scoring once and assisting 17 times. But minutes dropped this season under coach Niko Kovac. He handed in a transfer request in December.
Brighton coach Fabian Hürzeler welcomed the move. He knows Groß well from German football circles. Hürzeler said the midfielder brings experience and leadership.
Fans know his skills from seven years at the club. Groß helped Brighton reach their highest finishes and qualify for Europe.
Groß arrived at Brighton in 2017 from Ingolstadt for £3 million, a record fee then. He played 261 games, scoring 32 goals and providing 52 assists in all competitions. He became a key player in midfield, known for set pieces and vision.
His agent, Edoardo Crnjar from Excellence Sport, handled the talks. Photos showed Groß with Crnjar after signing.
Fans reacted with excitement. Many see it as a smart addition for depth. Brighton sit mid-table and push for another strong season. Groß could play soon, maybe in upcoming league games.
Dortmund let him go amicably. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl praised his professionalism. Groß thanked the club and fans for fulfilling his dream.
This transfer stands out in the January window. Few players return so quickly to a former club. It shows how needs change fast.
Groß earned caps for Germany too, including at Euro 2024. He adds international experience to the squad.
Brighton keep building under owner Tony Bloom. They spot talent and now bring back proven ones.
As the second half of the season starts, Groß gets a fresh chance in familiar surroundings. Supporters look forward to seeing him again in blue and white.
The deal wrapped up smoothly. Medical checks passed without issues. Football brings surprises. This one feels like a good fit for everyone involved.
