Manhunt as Murder Suspects Escape Mwatamba Police Post

Two suspects in a murder case escaped from lawful custody at Kadzandani Police Station in Nyali, Mombasa County, in the early hours of Friday, prompting a major manhunt. The suspects are identified as 23-year-old Anthony Changawa Charo and 30-year-old Seif Kai Makemba.
Police have held the pair in custody since their arrest on July 8, 2026, in connection with a murder case.
The suspects had been taken to the police station where they had been held for 16 days following orders issued by the Shanzu Law Courts for detectives to complete investigations, a police incident report said.
The two have already been identified by witnesses during an identification parade on July 14 and are due for a mental assessment on July 22 before taking a plea, police said.
Their escape was discovered at 6.04am during the routine handover between officers on duty. Initial investigations suggest the suspects forced their way through a metal security grill on a toilet window, pried ventilation blocks out to create an opening, and then escaped before scaling the stationโs perimeter wall.
Among the senior police officers who visited the scene where investigations were immediately launched are Mombasa County Police Commander Stella Cherono and County Criminal Investigations Officer George Muriuki.
The escape has raised serious questions about security protocols at the newly established Kadzandani Police Station, which was launched in August 2024 as part of efforts to enhance security across the Nyali sub-county.
Authorities are pursuing leads to find the dangerous fugitives, who the public should not approach. The public is urged to report to the nearest police station with information on the whereabouts of the two suspects. An investigation is ongoing.
