Former Somalia president Ali Mahdi Muhammad dies at Nairobi hospital, flown to Mogadishu

Ex-Somalia president Ali Mahdi Muhammad dies at Nairobi hospital after being hospitalised with severe COVID-19.

Somalia Information ministry spokesperson Ismael Omar authenticated the death.

Muhammad served as the President of Somalia from January 1991 to January 1997.

He was questioned by Gen Aidid and re-elected during a conference in Djibouti in July 1991.

He was nominally president till the election of Abdiqasim Salad in August 2000.

Mahdi was born in Addow Uul, Middle Shabelle.
