ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru says beginning December, 12th 2021, the day that Kenya celebrates Jamhuri Day, national identity cards will no longer be the legal document required to receive government services.

CS Mucheru announced in Machakos on Wednesday that Kenyans will require Huduma cards than IDs from 2022.

He added that Kenyans now have a year to collect their Huduma Namba cards with issuance set to begin next month.

“You will receive an SMS informing you where to collect your Huduma Namba card. You should do that within a month of receiving the SMS,” Mucheru said.

He was launching the second phase of Huduma Namba registration in Machakos where he confirmed that cards for those who registered earlier will be issued from next month in phases.

In December, the ICT boss said the government set to issue out 2 million Huduma Namba cards with five million others to be issued in January and February.

“When we start using Huduma Namba cards, we will root out a lot of corruption in the public sector. Ghost workers will disappear. There will no longer be fake students who receive capitation funds in schools. This will also be used to streamline NHIF services,” said Mucheru.
