Kenyans who forecast the weather without permission will pay a fine.
If media outlets or individuals in Kenya distribute weather forecasts that have not been authorized by meteorological authorities, they risk being fined one million Kenyan Shillings.
The Meteorology Bill 2023, which aims to control how climate data is gathered, examined, and shared with the public, will be discussed in the nation’s senate.
The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority, which will be the only organization in charge of disseminating weather forecasts, will also be established by the bill.
According to news site Kenyans, spreading unauthorized weather information will result in fines for citizens of the nation in Eastern Africa.
The Bill says that anyone who releases weather information or meteorological data to the public that was obtained from a weather station that is not registered with the Authority is breaking the law.
If found guilty, they could face up to Ksh1 million in fines, up to a year in jail, or both.
It would be illegal under the proposed law to disseminate meteorological data that you got from the Authority without getting permission from them.
The bill also establishes a maximum two-year jail sentence, a fine of Ksh5 million, or both for authority members found guilty of causing the authority to disseminate false information.
However, since those individuals relied on the Authority’s meteorological information, the Authority would not be held liable for any losses, damages, or injuries suffered by any individual.
