Anne Njeri, a prominent businesswoman, raised eyebrows after failing to appear before the Kenyan parliament to answer questions over a Ksh17 billion oil contract.
Anne Njeri, the oil mogul who was at the centre of a Ksh17 billion fuel import scandal, did not show up to testify in front of the National Assembly Committee on Energy.
On Wednesday, November 22, she was scheduled to testify in front of the Parliamentary Committee to provide further insight into the controversy surrounding the Ksh17 billion oil shipment.
The information was divulged by her attorney Cliff Ombeta that the entrepreneur was unable to testify before the Committee because she was ill.
“It is with deepest apologies that I must inform you that Ann Njeri will not be able to accept the invitation since she is now sick and unable to move. “She will be available at a later date convenient with the Committee,” the committee was told in part of an apology that was given to them.
Njeri is obligated to provide the Committee with information on the ownership details of the consignment, as well as the cargo’s country of origin and planned destination, amongst other matters of importance.
At the same time, Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka, who is the Chairperson for the Energy Committee, highlighted that the committee intended to visit the bank where the Ksh17 billion originated from, in addition to visiting offices for the oil firms that were featured in the gasoline importation scandal. Musyoka is the Mwala Member of Parliament who is the Chairperson of the Energy Committee.
The session with Energy cabinet secretary Davis Chirchir, which was due to take place on Thursday, November 23, was also postponed by the Committee, as stated by the Member of Parliament for Mwala.
The Committee claims that Anne Njeri ought to have been questioned about the same oil transaction before the Energy CS was questioned about it.
In the meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Mwala has said that the committee will schedule another date to question both the businesswoman Anne Njeri and the Secretary of State for Energy.
