Parliament cop arrested and charged with extorting Sh40,000 in parliament

A police officer at Parliament Police Station, Corporal John Mwai Mbili, is facing corruption charges for trying to extract Ks.40,000 from a suspect who has an outstanding matter at the station.

The police had arrested the complainant, but after forwarding the file to the DPP for prosecution approval, the DPP ordered the complainant’s release and an out-of-court settlement.

However, Corporal Mbili told the complainant that he must pay him “something small” to “facilitate a smooth closure” of the matter.

He demanded a bribe of Kes. 40,000 from the complainant, threatening that if he failed to pay, he would charge him in court with new offenses.

The complainant reported the matter to EACC, which conducted an inquiry and later arrested the police officer.

They escorted him to the Integrity Centre Police Station, processed him there, and then booked him at Kilimani Police Station.

The suspect has since been released on bail, pending the conclusion of the remaining aspects of the investigation.
