An investigation has been started to find a Mombasa lady who is suspected of defrauding locals out of more than Ksh3.9 million by promising them employment in Singapore, Canada, Dubai, and Saudi Arabia.
To get different employment, including teaching and security positions overseas, the lady allegedly misled more than 40 locals, according to the victims, who revealed their suffering on Saturday, June 3.
They were required to pay a charge to speed up the application process for their visas and airline tickets, as well as a balance when they received their first paycheck from overseas.
The victims reported that they gave the money to the lady between January and March 2023; however, they have been unable to find her since that time.
She persuaded us to pay Sh300,000 and then give her Sh200,000 from our wages later.
One of the victims said, “We were promised that we would acquire the work permits and the aircraft tickets, so we were not given any reason to distrust her.
She also used success stories and pictures of people she claimed she had helped go overseas to deceive the victims.
When the locals objected to the transaction, the lady started making excuses, such as the fact that her employer was ill, which is why there were travel delays.
“I phoned her because I was worried about the procedure and the reason it had taken so long, and she advised me to wait until Ramadan was over.
“When we began asking questions, we were told to contact the police and report that she and her associates had defrauded us of our money. Another victim said, “They asked us to be witnesses, but we declined.
The Kenya Association of Private Employment Agencies denied the woman’s claims to be a registered member and requested that the government take enforcement action against her.
Police officers said that investigators were looking for the culprit and that the probe was ongoing.
Roseline Njogu, the principal secretary for foreign and diaspora affairs, has recently warned Kenyans to be wary of dishonest and fake job traders.
To prevent being duped, she advised candidates to compare the overseas prospects with those listed on the ministry’s website.
The National Employment Authority offers several legitimate options. The Department of Foreign Affairs also noted that some individuals are abusing their separation while they look for work.
