The Senate ad hoc committee on COVID-19 pandemic chaired by Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has issued a summon against Interior CS Fred Matiangi to appear before the committee after failing to appear before them four times.

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and his Health counterpart CS Mutahi Kagwe summoned over police brutality and the extended arrest and detaining in quarantine facilities of citizens who violate the government’s COVID-19 rules.

Last week, the government said it will intensify the enforcement measures to limit the communal spread of COVID-19.

With Nairobi county taking the lead with the number of infections, the Interior ministry said it has mapped out key areas where Ministry of Health guidelines are not being followed; pointing to an increased risk of growing number of communal contagions.

Matiang’i said the government will ramp up enforcement measures without fear or favour to help curb the spread of the disease.
