State introduces VAT to Netflix, Showmax, bloggers, Uber, and all online subscribers

Netflix, Showmax and others subscribers to pay VAT

Kenya wants to endorse tax on online-based small businesses. Kenya Revenue Authority is looking for ways to include VAT on individuals surfing the internet.

Video streaming, Showmax, Bloggers, Uber, Netflix, Taxify, Safeboda, Social media business advertisers, Box-office, online brokers and all subscribers to internet-based small stream income will be added to the VAT pool.

Facebook events and businesses that are being advertised and provide some revenue will also be taxed. Applications that charge will be taxed too.

Subscription-based media including news magazines, streaming of television shows, music and podcasts will now be the subject of value-added tax (VAT).
