Uproar as suspended Huduma Kenya’s CEO, Benjamin Kai, resumes duties

In a surprising turn of events, the suspended CEO of Huduma Kenya, Benjamin Kai Chilumo, resumed his official duties today despite ongoing unresolved corruption charges.

His return comes after a high-profile suspension last year stemming from graft allegations during his tenure as Chief Finance Officer in Kilifi County, where EACC accused him of defrauding KSh 250 million.

The suspension was part of a broader crackdown on corruption involving 76 public officers, including six other CEOs.

The county assembly moved a motion to decentralize the functions of Ben Kai’s office during his tenure as Chief Officer for Finance in Kilifi County.

Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) supporting the motion noted that several county activities were stalling due to Kai’s grip on all county finances.

Thus, the chief officers were not able to serve the county as they had in the previous administration.

As a result, Kilifi County defaulted on its financial obligations to contractors and suppliers.

This led to stalled projects across the county.

The county was unable to provide basic services like garbage collection due to a lack of funds.

Employees at Huduma Kenya have reacted strongly to his return.

Some staff members expressed frustration, questioning the timing of his reinstatement.

“It’s disheartening to see someone return to their post while their corruption case remains unresolved,” said one employee, who wished to remain anonymous.

“This move undermines our efforts to maintain integrity and transparency within the organization.”

This reinstatement will certainly spark debate about accountability and the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures within the public sector.

Mother and joyful journalist.
