Nairobi residents have chased away Governor Johnson Sakaja; only Babu Owino was given a chance to address them.
A mob of frustrated Kibera residents attacked Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja with stones on Saturday, forcing him to seek shelter. Sakaja was chased away from Toi Market, Kibra Constituency, after being pelted with stones.
The outspoken governor had visited the Toi market, where a strange fire had destroyed numerous booths and buildings, allegedly resulting in the deaths of four people.
The image shows a mob of frustrated locals screaming the governor’s name and throwing stones at him.
Toi Market, which was on fire, resulted in 4 bodies burned beyond recognition.
Sakaja’s security personnel had to cover the county head as the situation deteriorated and led him out of the area.
They quickly escorted Governor Sakaja to his vehicle. Residents accused him of doing a terrible job running the county during the tragedy.
During his visit to the market, Governor Sakaja pledged to use the county disaster funds to reimburse affected dealers.
An electrical failure that occurred only a few hours ago is believed to have triggered the event that destroyed numerous stalls early in the morning.
The Saturday morning fire, which started at around four in the morning, destroyed all of the commercial buildings, rendering the market unusable.
Four individuals have died in the catastrophe, according to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who was providing an update on the event.
“This morning, there was another fire at Toi Market. Four people sadly lost their lives, according to local MP Peter Orero, with whom I met,” Sifuna said.
The senator promised to assist the impacted companies and families. He also reassured the locals of the county government’s resolve to put out these kinds of flames.
“As the leadership in Nairobi, we stand with you and will do our best not only to help restore your businesses but also to make sure we put an end to these incessant fires in our markets,” said Sifuna.
