Winfred Yavi forced to bribe Sh 200K in Kenya, now wins Gold for Bahrain

Meet Winfred Yavi, who was denied a chance to join the Kenyan team and was asked to pay Sh200,000 to secure a spot.

She decided to run for Bahrain and recently won a gold medal. A gold medal for Kenya only attracts Kshs 5 million, whereas she will receive Kshs 32 million.

Marathoner Winfred Yavi narrates her struggles and achievements in athletics.

In an earlier interview, while explaining her change of nationality to Bahrain, Winfred Yavi Mutile, the 3000m steeplechase Olympic gold medallist, said she repeatedly failed to get an opportunity to join the national team in Kenya.

She would participate in trials, but the Kenyan criteria never favoured her. She was told by the officials to pay Sh200,000 to secure a spot on Kenya’s team.

An opportunity arose to switch to Bahrain, and she took it. She is now a citizen of Bahrain.

She added that her Olympic triumph was the result of a journey she began in 2017 while in Kenya.
