The collection of signatures has reached 242, significantly surpassing the required 117 for the tabled motion. A planned impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua successfully surpasses the required 117 signatures for tabling, garnering the support of 242 MPs.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua condemned plans to charge his aides and allies over the Gen Z-led anti-government protests, describing it as the use of the criminal justice system to manage political issues.
While there is a plan to impeach DP Rigathi Gachagua, it is interesting that both Gachagua and Ruto, through senior counsel Fred Ngatia, are battling to have the courts throw out a petition filed by petitioners that calls for a referendum to afford Kenyans an opportunity to determine the fitness of the government remaining in office.
The ongoing court petition seeks to terminate both President William Ruto and DP Rigathi Gachagua’s tenure through a popular vote in a referendum.
Senior counsel Fred Ngatia represents Ruto and Gachagua, who appear as the first and second respondents in the petition.
On October 29th, the high court will bring the matter to the forefront, following the parties’ request earlier this week to submit their submissions.
In his submissions, lawyer Fred Ngatia asked the courts to throw away the petition.
The petition is so heavy that if it passes, it would jeopardize William Ruto’s presidency, which is why SC Ngatia is handling the case.
