MPs to increase Ruto term limit to 7 years with new Prime Minister office

Parliament has invited public input on the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The Bill additionally proposes to amend Article l0l to extend the term of a Member of Parliament from five years to seven years.

Sen. Cherarkey Samson Kiprotich of Nandi County has proposed a bill that would increase the terms of MPs and the President by 5 to 7 years.

Public submissions are open until October 25, 2024.

The bill also aims to establish Kenya’s prime ministerial constitution, which will incorporate the following new article immediately after Article 1-51:
151A. (1) The President shall appoint a Member of Parliament from the party or a coalition of majority parties in Parliament to serve as the Prime Minister of Kenya.

(2) The Prime Minister shall be the head of government, responsible for the day-to-day

(3) The Prime Minister shall serve at the President’s pleasure, and the President may terminate the Prime Minister’s appointment.

The bill proposes amending Article 136 to change the president’s term from five to seven years.

The bill proposes amending Article 180 of the Constitution to change the governor’s term from five to seven years.

The bill proposes to amend Article 177 of the Constitution to change the term of County Assembly members from five to seven years.

The Bill additionally proposes to amend Article 10(1) to extend the term of a Member of Parliament from five years to seven years.
