Singapore leader Pritam Singh sued for false submission

The opposition leader of Singapore, Pritam Singh, is on trial in a historic case for allegedly lying to a legislative committee during its investigation. The trial started on Monday.

The scandal surrounding Pritam Singh, 48, began when former MP Raeesah Khan made false statements to parliament in August 2021 about going with a victim of rape to the police station.

In connection with his testimony from the December 2021 hearings, the Workers’ Party secretary general faces charges for making false claims about his contacts with Khan, a former party member.

Prosecutors announced on Monday that Low Thia Khiang, his predecessor as secretary general of the Workers’ Party, will testify.

In the city state, this trial is the first of its sort.

After acknowledging lying in parliament, Raeesah Khan, a former MP for the Workers’ Party, received a S$35,000 fine for her involvement in the scandal.

Khan, who stated that she had previously admired Singh, was the first witness for the prosecution on Monday.

She declared before the court, “I revered him. He was someone I genuinely looked up to and believed to be truly knowledgeable. Someone who might know every solution.”
