KFS sale of MV Kilindini sparks safety fears at Likoni Ferry Channel

Activities at the Likoni crossing channel have noticeably slowed down after Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) sold one of its ferries.

The agency offloaded MV Kilindini, a ferry that had long served at the Likoni channel, leaving only three vessels—MV Likoni, MV Jambo, and MV Safari—operational as of Tuesday morning.

A spot check revealed that other ferries remain at the yard for unspecified reasons, leading to increased traffic and several incidents of stampedes as commuters struggle to cross.

Environmental experts are concerned about the wreckage that the MV Kilindini, currently stationed at the island side, has created.

They warn of potential marine and environmental hazards stemming from the ferry’s poor condition and lack of proper disposal measures.

Meanwhile, ferry users are deeply concerned about the silence from KFS. One commuter lamented, “We face the dangers of overcrowding and stampedes on our own.” Many are calling for urgent action to address the growing chaos at the channel.

The reduced capacity continues to strain the vital Likoni crossing, raising questions about the agency’s priorities and the long-term impact of its decisions.

Now analysts says this is designed to push the ferry traffic onto the Dongo Kundu bypass then toll it. People will soon  hear about the proposals.
