Mass Layoffs at Inchcape, Workers Demand Union Protection

Mass layoffs at Inchcape Kenya igniting the economy survival debate for companies in Kenya. The company announced that they will outsource to reduce wage burden in the firm.

The prominent automotive distributor Inchcape Kenya is under fire after sacking dozens of employees, many of whom were considered the company’s backbone.

The move comes as part of the company’s strategy to cut costs by outsourcing work to agencies, a decision that has sparked anger among workers.

“Nyakundi! There are issues at Inchcape Kenya. The company let go of more than 30 employees. Most of those dismissed were the backbone of the company.

“The company plans to outsource workers from agencies to cut costs. We need unions in Kenya to protect employees because it’s very unfair what ‘bosses’ are doing to hard-working and loyal employees who they see as a threat.”

“This is really disappointing to hear. Outsourcing work might save costs, but it comes at the expense of hard-working employees who have been loyal to the company for years. Companies should value their people more.”

Netizens had to criticise the move, saying, “Looking at the bigger picture, this is happening all over the place. What we are hearing is just a drop. Not all employees are bad; things are thick! This company now won’t have to pay SHIF, the housing levy, and the other crap taxes Ruto has imposed on employers. That simple.”

“Tricky situation; on one hand, it’s not fair to dismiss people like that, especially without notice. On the other hand, as a business, hard decisions have to be made; after all, most people get into business for profit.”
