The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has recently announced the introduction of mid-year examinations for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
These exams are set to be administered annually in July, starting from 2025. The initiative targets candidates who wish to repeat the KCSE examination, as well as those who might have missed the end-of-year exams due to reasons such as illness or other unexpected hardships.
Additionally, this move is seen as an opportunity for adult candidates to register for the KCSE.
This change aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the national examination system by providing more opportunities for students to sit for their exams.
The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results were officially released on January 9, 2025, by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.
However, immediately following the announcement, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) website crashed due to high traffic from students and parents trying to access the results.
A total of 962,512 candidates sat for the exams, which took place from October 22 to November 22, 2024. Significant improvements were noted in 17 subjects, including Maths, biology, physics, and chemistry, while 10 subjects, including English and home science, saw a decline in performance.
The KNEC portal, accessible at https://results.knec.ac.ke, was overwhelmed with logins, leading to it becoming inaccessible for many users.
This situation was compounded by the surge in traffic, causing delays and frustration among those trying to check their results.
Alternative Access: Candidates were advised to use toll-free numbers 0800724900 or 0800721410 if they faced difficulties accessing the website. Official result slips would also be available at the examination centers where candidates sat for their exams.
