A former member of the Repentance and Holiness Church, led by Prophet David Owuor, has been charged with online harassment. This happened under a law for computer crimes in Kenya.
The man, Bishop Faustine Ojango, recently left the church and started to speak out against it. He was arrested on January 3, 2025.
According to court documents, he is accused of posting hurtful messages on social media about Archbishop Michael Nieswand, who is a high-ranking leader in Owuor’s church.
The posts were made between December 27 and December 30, 2024, and were said to be damaging and meant to bother the church leader.
Bishop Ojango’s supporters are very upset about this situation. They believe that these charges are a way to silence him after he spoke publicly against Prophet Owuor.
Reports indicate that Ojango was not given a fair trial, and the magistrate set a very high bond of Ksh 2 million or a cash bail of Ksh 700,000.
There are claims that the church used its power to make sure he was arrested.
A source close to Ojango, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “This is an effort to hide the truth and punish him for speaking out. The charges are false and meant to silence anyone who criticizes Owuor’s ministry.”
Bishop Ojango had recently received attention for revealing what he calls unfair practices in the church, including money manipulation and a “cult-like environment.”
His statements have started discussions and more people are looking closely at Prophet Owuor’s ministry.
Efforts to get a response from Prophet Owuor and his church have not been successful.
