Kilifi IEBC Aisha Akinyi Abubakar killed by Machete gang in kisauni

A senior worker from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, was killed in a robbery at her home in Kisauni, Mombasa.

This happened around 3:00 am on January 5, 2025. Aisha was 48 years old and worked as the elections manager for IEBC in Kilifi County.

During the robbery, her 18-year-old son, Khasim Hassan, was badly hurt and is now getting treatment in a local hospital.

The robbers entered her house through a kitchen window, carrying a crowbar and a knife. They attacked Aisha, causing a serious injury above her right eye, and stole several items, including electronic goods, before escaping.

The police are actively working to find the suspects. They think this case might be more than a simple robbery because of how the attack happened and the items taken, including some IEBC documents.

This incident has raised worries about the safety of electoral officials, especially since there have been similar incidents in the past involving IEBC staff.

Local political leaders have spoken about this event, with some suggesting that Aisha might have been targeted. However, the police have not confirmed this idea yet.

The community and Aisha’s colleagues at IEBC are shocked and sad about what happened. They are calling for better security for public servants, especially for those working in important roles like managing elections.
