Raila Odinga: I don’t mind losing AUC elections

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has emphasized that securing the African Union Commission chairmanship is not an absolute necessity for him.

During the burial of Mzee Richard Oudia in Bondo, Siaya County on Saturday, Raila stated that the result will only be determined once the voting takes place.

He mentioned that while a victory would be beneficial for the continent, there is nothing wrong with him losing to others in the race.

Raila added that even if he does not win, he will remain committed to working with the community as he has always done.

“When the votes are counted, we will see if I have emerged victorious or not. If we win, that’s great, and if we don’t, it’s perfectly fine. If I don’t win, I’ll still be here with you all. If I win, it will be advantageous as I will be able to work and do many things that can benefit us here.

“If I lose, I’ll remain here with you, and we will collaborate as a community,” Raila stated.

The former Prime Minister’s comments arise as the campaign period approaches its end.

The election for the next AUC chairperson is scheduled for February. Raila will be in a contest against Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar.

Raila has launched an extensive campaign that will take him to at least 10 southern African nations this month.

The ex-PM began his campaign vigorously last week, starting in Mauritius, where he gained the support of the island nation.

Leading the campaign team is former Kenya’s ambassador to the US, Elkanah Odembo, who is organizing a tightly packed campaign itinerary that will keep Raila in the southern part of the continent throughout most of January.

According to the plans shared with the Star, Raila intends to meet with three recently elected presidents to outline his agenda for the continent and seek their backing.

The new presidents include Daniel Chapo (Mozambique), Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah (Namibia), and Duma Boko (Botswana).
