Sean Dyche has been sacked by Everton after almost two years as manager, with the decision coming just hours before the club’s FA Cup third-round match against Peterborough.
The sacking follows a dismal run of form, with Everton sitting just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
Dyche, who was appointed in January 2023, managed to secure Everton’s Premier League status in the previous two seasons despite various challenges, including an eight-point deduction for financial rule breaches.
However, this season, the team has only managed three wins from 19 games, with the side struggling to score goals and having won just one of their last 11 Premier League matches.
Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman are set to take temporary charge of the team for the FA Cup tie. Several members of Dyche’s coaching staff, including Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard, and Billy Mercer, have also left the club.
The Friedkin Group, Everton’s new owners since December 2024, made this decision amidst growing pressure due to the team’s poor performance.
The sacking was announced on January 9, 2025, and has sparked discussions on who might replace Dyche, with names like Jose Mourinho being mentioned, though not considered a likely candidate due to his recent exit from Roma, also owned by the Friedkin Group.
Other names like David Moyes and Paulo Fonseca have been linked with the position as well.
