Will switch off! William Kabogo on the neck of netizens

William Kabogo, Kenya’s newly approved ICT Cabinet Secretary, has recently issued warnings regarding the responsible use of social media.

During his vetting in parliament and subsequent public statements, Kabogo has emphasized the need for regulation to curb the misuse of social media platforms, particularly targeting content like the sharing of images depicting leaders in coffins, which he views as harmful or unethical.

He has pledged to engage with the youth, especially Gen Z, to promote a more ethical use of the internet and social media.

Kabogo has also hinted at the government’s capacity to potentially “switch off” social media if the misuse continues, suggesting a strong regulatory approach to ensure responsible behavior online.

His statements have sparked discussions on the balance between freedom of expression and the ethical use of digital platforms.

This approach aligns with his broader agenda to regulate social media apps, aiming to protect users from rogue applications and to address issues like hate speech, misinformation, and the inappropriate use of technology.

Kabogo has been clear about his intent to work on these issues from his first days in office, indicating a priority to set clear guidelines and possibly stricter laws around social media usage in Kenya.
