Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been given a 12-year prison sentence or a fine of Ksh 53.5 million. He has also received a five-year jail term or a fine of Ksh 2.5 million for his actions.
The court ordered Waititu to pay a large fine of Ksh 51 million. If he does not pay this fine, he will have to serve an additional seven years in prison. His conviction is related to wrongful tender awards in Kiambu County from February 2018.
Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki from the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court said that Waititu’s actions broke the trust placed in him by the public.
Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangare, was fined Ksh 500,000 or given one year in prison. The court mentioned that the couple gained from their wrongdoing at the expense of public service.
Luka Mwangi Wahinya, the former Chief Officer for Roads in Kiambu, received a two-year sentence or a fine of Ksh 1 million. He was also fined Ksh 20 million; failing to pay this will add five years to his prison time.
Directors of Testimony Enterprises Limited, Charles Chege Mbuthia and Beth Wangeci Mburu, received jail sentences of four years and three years, respectively.
Mbuthia was fined Ksh 2 million plus another mandatory fine of Ksh 294 million. Wangeci was fined Ksh 1.4 million. The court expressed concern about their forgery of academic documents.
Waititu, his wife, and the other individuals involved are not allowed to hold public office for ten years.
The court also ordered the return of seized items, including passports, cash bail, and title deeds. Waititu and the others have 14 days to appeal the court’s decision.
