Kisii-Nyamira Border Planned Airstrip Relocated to Kilgoris

An airstrip originally slated for construction between Kisii and Nyamira Counties has been redirected to Kilgoris, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The decision marks a significant shift in infrastructure planning for the region, stirring mixed reactions among local residents and stakeholders.

The proposed airstrip initially intended to boost connectivity and economic activity along the Kisii-Nyamira border, had been in the planning stages for months.

However, authorities have now opted to relocate the project to Kilgoris, a town in Narok County approximately 70 kilometres southwest of the original site.

The move is said to align with updated regional development priorities, though specific reasons for the change were not fully detailed in the announcement.

Local leaders in Kilgoris have welcomed the decision, citing potential benefits for tourism and trade in the area, which lies near the Maasai Mara National Reserve, a globally renowned wildlife destination.

“This is a game-changer for Kilgoris,” said area representative John Lekerian. “It will open up opportunities for our people and put us on the map.”

Meanwhile, communities in Kisii and Nyamira expressed disappointment over losing the project. “We were counting on this airstrip to improve access and bring development here,” said Mary Onyancha, a resident of Kisii.

“Now we feel overlooked.” Some have called for clarity on why the site was abandoned, questioning whether logistical, budgetary, or political factors influenced the relocation.

However, netizens have a different view of the tender advertised air trip in Kilgoris. On social media, netizens claim that the airport will be constructed for personal reasons, not public interest.

Kilgoris

“Ruto is meticulously engineering his own locus of power and privilege, a Kilgoris stronghold reminiscent of the Kabarak estate, complete with an exclusive airstrip.

“In a nation grappling with economic precarity, his relentless pursuit of wealth consolidation and infrastructural self-indulgence lays bare a stark prioritisation of personal empire-building over national stewardship.

“The trajectory is unmistakable—Sugoi was merely a stepping stone. Kilgoris is the grand design.” Mohammad Onyango said on X.
