A police officer who was part of the security team for a CEO shot and killed a fellow officer after a fight outside a bar in Ruaraka, Nairobi County.
The officer who died, Constable Raphael Kimilu Wambua, worked in the General Service Unit (GSU).
He was with his brother when he got into an argument with another officer around 1:30 am on Saturday, February 22, near Naivas in Ruaraka.
Witnesses say that Wambua, his brother, and the other officer were walking home from a club when their argument turned into a physical fight. The other officer then took out his gun and shot Wambua.
After the shooting, the officer tried to run away, but people from the area caught him and tried to take justice into their own hands.
Police officers from Ruaraka Police Station, who were on patrol at the time, came to help and rescued him.
The officer who was shot was taken to the hospital, and Wambua’s body was taken to Kenyatta University Mortuary.
In recent years, there has been an increase in deaths among police officers, often linked to mental health issues.
To help with this, police authorities have started offering counselling services. The National Police Service Commission has also set up a special unit to focus on these problems.
This unit will run programs to help prevent mental health crises and problems with substance abuse among officers.
