Kenya is dealing with a big problem; a shortage of condoms. This is happening because the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has stopped funding.
Now, many areas in Kenya only have enough condoms for six months. This situation is worrying because it could lead to more sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies.
Each year, Kenya needs about 400 million condoms, but they are only getting around 200 million. The cut in funding has made this problem worse.
About 68% of adults in Kenya use condoms, which shows how important it is to have enough available.
Every day, around 17,000 condoms are used, and that means there aren’t enough to meet the needs.
People in the community, as well as news reports from Citizen TV Kenya and Prime Media Kenya, are expressing concerns about what this funding cut will mean for public health.
They worry there will be more STIs and unintended pregnancies as a result.
