The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
The court found him guilty of culpable homicide in connection with the death of the renowned gospel star, who passed away on April 8, 2022.
Justice [Name, if available] delivered the verdict on Tuesday, concluding a high-profile case that sparked widespread public outcry over allegations of domestic violence.
Osinachi, celebrated for her hit song Ekwueme, was 42 at the time of her death, which was initially reported as resulting from throat cancer but later linked to alleged abuse by her husband.
The prosecution presented evidence that Nwachukwu’s actions directly contributed to Osinachi’s death, leading to the culpable homicide conviction.
The defence’s arguments failed to sway the court, which ruled that the evidence warranted the maximum penalty.
Nwachukwu showed no visible emotion as the sentence was read. His legal team has indicated plans to appeal the ruling. The case has reignited discussions on domestic violence in Nigeria, with activists calling for stronger protections for victims.
Osinachi’s fans and family gathered outside the courtroom, expressing mixed emotions of relief and grief. “Justice has been served, but it won’t bring her back,” said a family spokesperson.
The court adjourned after the sentencing, with no date yet set for the appeal process.
