5 Bodies Recovered from Hennops River in Centurion

A grim discovery has unfolded at the Hennops River in Centurion, where police and emergency services have recovered five bodies during a search and rescue operation.

The operation, which began earlier today, initially focused on locating three missing police constables, with authorities now confirming the retrieval of three bodies believed to be the officers.

Two additional bodies were found later, though their identities remain unconfirmed.

According to police reports, the search was launched following reports of individuals missing in the area. Emergency services, including Tshwane EMS, have been deployed to the scene, with divers and disaster management crews navigating the river’s challenging conditions.

The Hennops River, known for its strong currents and history of flooding, has previously been the site of similar incidents. In 2021, heavy rains caused significant flooding of low-lying bridges along the river, complicating access and rescue efforts.

SABC News reporter Chriselda Lewis, broadcasting live from the scene, described an active operation with authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“The scene remains active, and investigations are ongoing,” Lewis reported. Police have urged the public to avoid the area to facilitate the operation and ensure safety.

Netizens have reflected public concern, with users sharing updates and expressing condolences. One post noted, “The Hennops River operation is heartbreaking. Thoughts with the families and responders.”

The Hennops River has a history of incidents, including a 2024 case where a man was believed to have been swept away while fleeing security officers, and a 2022 rescue of a jogger trapped in the river’s currents.
