SHA have mercy! Dr Mercy Mwangangi becomes new SHA CEO

The Ministry of Health has named Dr Mercy Mwangangi as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority (SHA), marking a significant step in the agency’s mission to advance universal health coverage in Kenya.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the appointment on Friday, following a competitive recruitment process.

Dr Mwangangi, a seasoned health economist and policy expert, brings over 15 years of experience to the role.

She rose to national prominence as Chief Administrative Secretary during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning praise for her clear communication and leadership.

Most recently, she served as Senior Health Systems Strengthening Director at AMREF Health Africa, where she spearheaded initiatives in health financing and security across the continent.

The SHA, which replaced the National Health Insurance Fund, has faced challenges, including public concerns over accessibility and unpaid claims by healthcare providers.

Dr Mwangangi’s appointment is seen as a move to stabilise and strengthen the authority’s operations. “Her track record in policy reform and resource mobilisation positions her to lead SHA effectively,” Duale said.

Kenyans have taken to social media to express mixed sentiments, with many optimistic about her ability to address SHA’s teething problems, while others remain cautious, citing the agency’s rocky rollout.

Dr Mwangangi assumes the role immediately, tasked with steering the SHA toward delivering accessible healthcare for all.

Mother and joyful journalist.
