The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has shared important information about a big problem: there are not enough bees in Kenya. This is a serious issue because bees help pollinate plants, which is very important for farming.
The KWS says one main reason for the drop in bee numbers is the use of chemicals on farms.
They explained that pesticides and other chemicals are hurting the bees. This harm affects how bees reproduce and leads to many of them dying.
KWS Director-General Peter Miano explained, “Bees are important for our environment and for getting food. We need to fix the problem of using harmful chemicals quickly.”
The shortage of bees could harm Kenya’s farming, especially for crops like coffee, avocados, and macadamia nuts that need bees for pollination.
Environmental groups want stricter rules about using chemicals and want more support for organic farming, which is better for bees.
KWS is trying to work with the Ministry of Agriculture to find better solutions, including safer options for farmers to use. They are also studying the issue more, with results expected by late 2025.
