I spent three years in a relationship that, from the outside, seemed like a fantasy. Together, we made plans for the future, travelled, laughed, and even discussed purchasing land. But there was always something strange going on behind closed doors. I couldn’t substantiate what my intuition whispered. His eyes would change when I asked him harmless questions. His tales would evolve. He never had his phone unlocked. Additionally, the number of late nights spent “at work” was increasing.
I fought him several times. Every time, with tears in his eyes, he would either accuse me of being insecure or make a change promise. I wanted to think he was real. I really did. I cherished him. Even if everything appeared whole from a distance, I could see the falsehoods growing like cracks in a vase. Then the worst happened. He unintentionally left his second phone in my car one evening.
